Madobemedia

Mike Chambers just blogged that Adobe and Macromedia are willing to merge.

Wow, this is breaking news but is it good or bad news? Madobemedia?
Mike Chambers also announced Flash 8 for the second half of 2005. Let us hope the merge won’t effect the Flash 8 release.

What else will be effected by this marriage?
FlashPaper vs. PDF
Freehand vs. Illustrator
Fireworks vs. Photoshop
Premiere / Aftereffects will force the Flash Video development?

But we could see this coming when you look at the Flash 8 preview from Aral Balkan. The new filter- and blend-features look like copied from Photoshop ;)

Press news:

Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq: ADBE) has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Macromedia (Nasdaq: MACR) in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $3.4 billion. Under the terms of the agreement, which has been approved by both boards of directors, Macromedia stockholders will receive, at a fixed exchange ratio, 0.69 shares of Adobe common stock for every share of Macromedia common stock in a tax-free exchange. Based on Adobe’s and Macromedia’s closing prices on Friday April 15, 2005, this represents a price of $41.86 per share of Macromedia common stock.

  • I think that this will be very bad for Freehand users. Freehand users feel about Illustrator about the same way Mac users feel about the PC. It is usually the the Mac user, or in this case the Freehand user that that has experience with both environments.

Personally, I find Freehand built for speed in every aspect. This is very important when meeting deadlines. I find that Illustrator has some very powerful features; however, none that are not more efficiently produced using Photoshop. My complaints with Illustrator are not based on what Freehand can do and that Illustrator can’t. My complaints with Illustrator are based on what most programs, including Quark, can do that Illustrator can’t.

Here are just a few features I would like to see Illustrator incorporate:

1/100 em kerning using keyboard shortcuts–currently limited to 2/100

Multiple pages–very few pieces I create require only one side or one option. This would be great in creating multiple page PDFs without having to combine multiple PDF docs into one later.

Select objects beneath the top object by holding down a key combinatin and clicking continuously until the desired object is selected. Hiding object after object is tediously slow.

Cleaner masking feature. When a mask is used on a complex vector graphic the masked object can still be seen in outline view. This creates a nightmare when trying to select unrelated objects located in areas that would normally masked. When an object is masked I don’t want to see it protrude from the masking object.

Moving objects from one layer to another. In document that has many layers, moving an object from layer to another requires you to drag the selection dot in the layers pallet from one layer to another. This could be a very long way up/down the list. Why can’t I just select the object and click the layer I want it moved to, or to prevent accidents, option-shift-click the layer I want it moved to–or any other key combination for that matter. I’d also like to move objects to hidden layers without first making them visible.

Change font size: If I want to change the text size by dragging a corner its box I have to change tools–very cumbersome. If I want to change the text size using key combinations I am only given one increment option.

Adjusting handles: Why does it have to be so difficult to grab a handle when trying to adjust a curve. I notice that if I change to outline view it is much easier, but no other program I have seems to have this problem.

Paste vector obects into text blocks: Why can’t I paste an obect into a text block, so that it flows with the text when edits are made?

Snap to Guides: Snap-to applies to cursor location and not the bounding edges of a an object. For example, I can’t just grab a box and move it to a snap-to-guide. I have to grab the edge (and hope I get the exact edge) and move it to the guide.

Text fields in Measurement Pallette: This is minor, but it would be convenient if I could copy a measurement number from one text field and paste it into another text field.

Save takes forever. Why does it take so long to save vector artwork? These are small files.

Leading: Why can’t I set leading to a percentage of text size.

I have many more things to add to the list, but this really is just representative of the features that are available in both Freehand and Quark.
