The Flash Player penetration statistic of June 2005 is online.
If you look at Europe the Flash Player 7 penetration goes back from 92.3% in March 2005 to 92.1% in June 2005. USA and Asia also lose a few points and only Canada has a small increase.
Can somebody explain me this? Flash Player 8 beta is only available since July 2005 and can’t cause a decrease. Since also the Flash Player 6 penetration is smaller it can’t be a browser issue like many people switched to Firefox.
Bless Canada!

I think it’s just an artefact in the statistics because they’re now not measuring information on version 5 and below (i.e. **As of June, 2005 Flash Player versions less than 5 are no longer measured). And all statistics have a ~1% margin of error.
statistical error dude. like how bush got elected.
From what I read here, it’s actually +/- 5%, so don’t think too much about that. It’s more than enough

Nah, that one was human error.
That has happened before. I think it’s a given that it’s probably due to new computers – computers that come with Flash Player 5 (or something) installed out-of-the-box on MSIE. If the ammount of new computers arriving is bigger than that of people installing new versions of players, that fluctuation occurs.
Of course, statistical error margins also apply, specially because it’s not the same people being measured.
Already got you covered….

As Jensa described there’s an overall 95% confidence level, but once you get into smaller regions or versions this would increase.
(The testing actually measures *capabilities*, not installed Player version… “Can you see this SWF6 file? How about this SWF7 file?” and so on. The new Player doesn’t cause declines.
Now, let’s hope no one takes that headline and puts it on Slashdot….

The headline should not say Flash is dead but I was only curious why it decreased because I followed the statistic all over the years and it’s the first time the penetration was decreased.
I guess the Slashdot people have other problems with the penetration of the Java VM
Are you sure it’s not due to an increase in mobile internet users? Even if Flash Lite statistics are incorporated into the figures, it could just reflect the way it is harder to get flash woring on a pda or telephone. You have to dig for the plugin, and most people have no idea what it is.
However these are still internet users and are most likely to still be included in these figures.
For what it’s worth, I’ve seen within-margin-of-error decreases in individual audits in the past, particularly when combined with sub-testing on versions or regions, and particularly once we get above the 90% viewership level.
(The NPD audit does not, to my knowledge, test viewership on anything other than fullsized computers.)
